Most pro's no longer use actual pine tar anymore. In spring training many of the players and/or their agents buy a product known as a "Manny Mota Stick". It's a synthetic pine tar made from wood resins, which is the sticky part of the tar but the main advantage is it doesn't melt or break down on a hot, humid summer day. One stick can last about 100 at bats, so it's more economical, too. And it's not a black mess, either. Check this out. It's the closest thing to a "Manny Mota Stick"...

It's Pine Tar. And it is put on the bat handle to gain a better (stickier) grip. Very specific rules in MLB as to how much pine tar can be on a bat. Just ask George Brett.
