i ask this because yesterday a girl stared at me for a long time and i would have want to say something to her but i wasn't sure that she was interested in me... cos i dress punk so maybe she was thinking: "god that girl is insane!!" or something like that.

You would have to ask to know for sure, everything else is a sterotype and most people don't fit into sterotypes. You could ask about their girlfriend or boyfriend but that doesn't work if they are bi or single.
Why are you asking? To find a date or because you think your friend is a lesbian or gay and you want to know so you can support them? There is info on the PFLAG site under FAQ about thinking a friend or family member is gay/lesbian/bisexual and what to do. If it's a date review past questions and answers, it's been asked before.

I used to think you could tell by those things...hair, clothes, lack of make-up (for women) and tom-boyish mannerisms...etc.
You can't always judge a book by its cover and lots of people are telling me that they wouldn't have thought someone was Lesbo by the description I gave above. I did and maybe I was wrong ?
You just can't tell...just ask them (hah...that'd go over well, huh ?) or wait until they tell you one day, hopefully.

If anyone is to answer this it would definitely be stereotyping. The best way to "find out" if someone is gay, is to ask them,,,
