I lived in Pasadena and relocated to San Diego, glad to get out of LA. Pasadena is a nice city to live in, but there is a war between the haves and the have nots. My cars were constantly being broken into, my home was robbed, plants taken right off of my front porch and I just got tired of looking over my shoulder. It got to the point where I just didn't feel safe anywhere I went. Also, I got tired of traffic at all hours of the day and night. Anywhere you can think to go, anything you can think to do, everyone else thought of it and is already there, so there is crowds and lines everywhere. It is also a noisy place to live, helicopters overhead rattling the dishes in the cupboards, car and truck traffic, roach coaches playing loud tunes to attract the lunch crowd, car alarms at all hours, mow and blowers early in the morning, rarely a moment of silence.
San Diego has its traffic problems, too. But, I like it here much better. For one, there is peace and quiet most of the time. People are friendlier, care more about the neighborhoods in which they live and aren't always in so much of a rush. It is expensive to live here, however. Overall, I am thrilled to just have the feeling of safety in my own home!

I should know; I live in San Diego. Here in San Diego, it's better because it is cleaner and we only have 3 area codes to choose from. In Los Angeles, there are more area codes than Henry VIII had wives.
Plus, if you're into biotech stuff, the biotech industry is BIG here. There's no smog, miles of beaches, an awesome zoo, and great schools. The only thing to worry about is the price of housing but for now, it's best to find a roommate and split the cost.

I have lived in both and would definitely say San Diego. LA is too crowded, expensive, has a lot of traffic and crime and people aren't very friendly. In San Diego it's definitely expensive but you can find a nice area for less money and it isn't as crowded, although it may grow to be as bad as LA someday soon. It's cleaner and I think people are friendlier. And if you want to go do something in LA it's not too far.

I've lived in both places before I moved to Mexico. LA has changed so much over the last 20 years, I hardly recoginze it. Its still a great place to live, but with choice, I'd say San Diego for a young guy. Lots of young people, beach towns, good colleges, good vibes. Both are expensive. Good hunting.
