Try turning the garment inside out and spray with hairspray then rub clothing with a bar of soap. Rinse with cold water and hang dry.

Well you could either be stuck throwing it away becuase you can't get out the brown stains or throwing it away becuase of whatever the bleach does. As I see it you have nothing to loose. What I would do is just bleach the parts that have the brown stains. I think what bleach does to fabric that says no bleach is weaken the material so I wouldn't soak it in bleach or you might be walking down the street and it falls apart. I don't think it will be that drastic, but I think you should try to get the stains out.

I'd take a chance and use real chlorine bleach diluted with water and added to the washer after the detergent goes in. Put the clothing in last, after the washer fills and starts to agitate.
This next part might sound weird, but hear me out. Was the identical style of sweater available in colors besides white when you bought it?
If it was, you should know that care label was intended for dyed garments. They don't bother to put a different label in the white sweater--too costly to make that change.
As long as there's no wool or silk in the blend, I'd bleach the thing,

You can try other stain removers. Usually white colour doesn't hurt by bleach but it is not always color, sometimes bleach destroy the fabric as well. To be on the safe side, stay away from using bleach and instead get a stain remover from your local store. There are many removers available.

The bleach might eat through because of the polyester. It's synthetic. Try a spray stain remover like Shout or Spraynwash.
If that doesn't work, try Oxyclean.

I don't think it'll hurt it. I've used bleach as a last resort before, and I've been amazed at the results - without damage at all to the garment.

You might be able to get away with it once, maybe twice, but normally the Bleach will make the white turn to a yellow.

There are stain removers, I recommend using one. If you use bleach, which is an oxidizer, there could be some consequences. The fabric may weaken and tear, it may lose it's color (if it has any) and many other problems.
