Banks are legally required to put brail on the ATMs by the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board, reasoning that driver assistance "would not allow the [blind] individual to use the ATM independently." ATM manufacturers say a fair number of blind people do take cabs to drive-up ATMs, and nobody wants to ask a total stranger to help with a financial transaction.

I thought that too at one time, but then my husband and I had a discussion about it. He made me realize that even people who are blind may need quick cash out of their account in the middle of the night. So, they probably have a person who can see, drive them to the ATM and then the blind person gets out of the car and does their transaction! Hence the need for brail on the ATM machines! :)

All atm's have brail on them. It would cost to much to make them without just for the drive thru's.

Many of the more sophisticated automobiles today with sensors and advanced technology and the sonar and radar technologies, do allow the blind to drive. As the sightless pull up to the ATM machine, they are able then to use the Braille to make their banking choices.

Some people who are blind have someone drive them and the car can pull up the opposite way, so the blind passenger can use the ATM.

All ATM machine keys are mass produced. It would cost more for them to install keys without braille.

The machines are made for both drive through and lobbies. It doesn't make sense for them to make different machines.

It does seem a little weird but think of somebody that was not blind drove a blind person there got them out of the car and helped them... it would be so weird now would it.

So you can drive your blind friend to the ATM and they can still use it -- to get money, ya know?
