It made the headlines because Zidane is considered by many as the greatest soccer player in the last 10 years. Plus it happened during a World Cup final, with billions of people viewing it live on TV.

When Totti spit at the Euro Cup, nobody cared. I bet even when Zidane headbutted another player during a Champions League game, nobody cared that much -- he wasn't as famous as he is now.

Plus, in France they are still talking about it, trying to justify him and filing lawsuits to have the final replayed, and that adds to the hype.

Explorerdora has hit the nail right on the head. He is so loved and admired by so many world wide for his skills and talent. Yes he does have some nasties in his playing past, but so do many if you research them. He has found a place in peoples hearts and people will always protect and defend their heart. I am saddened that this incident happened the way it did both for his action and the provocation leading to it. Without condoning it, I respect Zidane and as a man also. He is just such a pleasure to watch.

Zidane stole their show!

Zidane represents some kind of fallen football angel, whose fall was broken by the people's love for him.

The Zidane fiasco is more intriguing than Italy winning the world cup, its new and exciting, somebody always wins. Zidane's headbutt is shrowded in mystery, people are automatically drawn to it. People LOVE to put their two cents in, Zidane provided them the perfect oppurtunity.

I think many people would have liked to see him win the Cup, since he is a fascinating player (on the pitch; don't know about his public life) and about to retire. True football fans (and the American media) are marveled by his technique and one must acknowledge that he is one of the best mid-fielders to play the game. But I think many people like Cinderella stories; a great player coming from retirement and leading his team to the Cup single-handedly. Then comes the head-butt, which is quite frankly shocking. I think many people were in shock and severely disappointed to see a player with such talent act so brutely and childishly to provocation. Granted, he has a history of violence, but his graceful game tended to subdue that. As someone once said here, ALL GENIUSES ARE IN REALITY MAD OR CAN EASILY GO MAD. OR BETTER YET: GENIUSNESS IS A FORM OF MADNESS. I think the shock and disappointment overshadowed the entire tourney.

It's because people are curious. They want to know what provoked Zidane, what did Materazzi say, will FIFA strip the golden ball award from Zidane and many more questions.

i think that what zidan did was a shock for most of the world

you don't expect a pro. player like zidan to use his head "the same head he used to score two gools in 1998 and gave France the cup" to hit Materazi...

After a couple of days everybody'll forget the names of the players who won the Cup. But, Zidane'll remain in the heart of the billions.

PS : Sorry, no! Materazzi'll be remembered for a long time as a ****.
