Jerry knew he was dying. They wrote him out before his death by having Lenny retire. Was a sad day when he died... I thought he was a great actor. A legend, in fact.

His character retired on the show and left the series shortly before his death. I miss him. I loved that character. I don't even watch that particular Law and Order anymore cause I can't stand the guy who took his place. Rest in peace, Jerry.

He did. yet no longer at the same time as component of the solid of the unique regulation & Order. He left that when he became diugnost with maximum cancers; yet desperate to hitch the solid of the very short lived fourth spin-off from thte unique: regulation and Order: Trial by capacity of Jury, because of the fact it would be a smaller function of Lenny Briscoe. The coach did no longer final long after Jerry Orbach died.

His character "retired" from the original L&O shortly before he passed away...he had just started to do the new L&O series (Trial by Jury) when he passed...the series was later cancelled.
