They light up to attract female lightning bugs, its a mating call. So, since they know they are lighting, and they do it for a purpose, I assume they know it can only be seen in the dark.

I heard they stay under lights all day so they can light up at night.... Speaking of night.... Isn't it past your bed time?

yes they do, just catch some and find out for yourself, they do it to find a mate
