Can't they just think I just want to be friends with them? Is there really a barrier between men and women?

Studies have shown that males are far more likely than females to percieve friendliness from the opposite sex as romantic interest.

Reasons why? I'm not too sure. I'm a male, and while there aren't too many girls I consider to be "close" friends of mine, in the past I haven't confused these friendships with romantic interest.

One point to consider, though: You did say "close" friends. To me, this says the friendship involves a lot of trust, friendship, and probably affection. Don't you think that when a male and female are "close", the only difference between it being a friendship and a romantic relationship is physical romantic contact?

It's just my opinion, but if a single male and a single female are "close" friends, romance is inevitable, as long as there is an attraction between the two.

Well, By me being a male. I believe the that there is a barrier between men and women. But the state of being, that you are getting closer to your male-friend. is a probably showing more of a closer relationship then just friend. About 98.9% that tens to make the male find you more attractive."a crush"

Because when a girl wants to get closer to a guy it usually means she likes him. Tell him you want to be just friends and they will usually understand. I think there is a huge barrier between men and women!

If this is really happening to you very often, either you are sending out too many flirtatious signals, you need to be around a different set of men, you are delusional, or maybe, you're just too hot! At any event, the honest thing to do would be to ask them!

It's a toss up between arrogance and ignorance. Some guys are ignorant because they've just never had a real male-female friendship. Others are just arrogant and assume every girl that calls them wants them....losers.
