As a Pagan myself i have noticed that the definition of Paganism differs alot from person to person, so i thought i'd check out my theory.

Pagan comes from a latin word meaning viliger or "someone from the country"

it was used derogatorally pretty much like calling someone a hillbilly

Christianity was considered something new at the time and many non urban people were not quick to jump on the christain band wagon so the terms of Pagan and villiger became the same.. pagan

Paganism is the non belief of God. its based on ancient customs that there are many gods Such as a god of hearth and home, a god of storms and forests a god of stone, a god of war, etc

"A wee child toddeling in a wonder world. I prefer to their dogma my excursions into the natural gardens where the voice of the Great Spirit is heard in the twittering of birds, the rippling of the mighty waters, and sweet breathing of flowers. If this is Paganism, then at present, at least, I am Pagan."

I'm Native American ... that was a quote from my Ancestors from the 1800's. It says what I would say.

Pagan is basically a Christian term used to describe anyone who is not a Christian. Then again, most of the festivals associated with Christianity came from Pagans.

pagan literally means 'country dweller' but today it has come to mean people who believe in some form of a fertility based, earth based spirituality.

And yes, I am a pagan and magic is an option. :-)
