First, take him to the vet and have them check him over. Maybe he fell and hurt himself, or injured his back and it hurts when you pet him. Next, get a glove that is hard for him to bite through but easy for you to hold him through. I suggest a good leather just for protection. When he tries to bite, blow in his face. They don't like it and he'll back off. Hold him for a second and let him go and give him a treat or something else he likes. Soon he will related being held with good things and not feel the urge to bite. Also be sure that your hand doesn't smell like food!

There is this stuff that is very very bitter tasting and you spray it on everything. It doesn't stain or anything. You can get it at Petco or another pet shop. It is in the ferret isle but it is fine for rats (i have used it when my rats started biting through the bars in the cage). Also if you don't want to go out or want an easier way, just put lemon or something sour or gross tasting on your hands. Just make sure it is not poisonous to your rat! : )

I had 2 rats and one of them was old, and the other rat started to protect it, and after that I couldn't hold it anymore. I think it just happens sometimes.

Mine became aggresive when he reached adulthood. Try wearing leather gloves with hot pepper smeared on them. He learns that to bite you means a hot mouth worked for my rat.

Do you give it treats by hand? Mine will mistake my fingers for treats sometimes, because I usually hand feed them treats. And If you've been eating and you reach in there to pet them, they will smell the food on your fingers and want to taste it. My usually give me this remorseful look when they realize that they've just bitten me. My female has actually broken my skin once!

Why you want a pet rat? Try a gold fish instead.

I let my ratties out often and over time they mellowed. I had a few girls who were aggressive and would not ever let me hold them as they got older.
