I first discovered Heinlein when I was an adolescent. My favorite among his books then was Farmer in the Sky, and I must admit I still like it now.
But my favorite--and one that is especially relevant for 2006--is JOB: A Comedy of Errors. It's a "sort-of" retelling of the book of Job, and it deals with what happens when the separation of church and state is abrogated. I read it about fifteen years ago. If I can find my copy, I think I may read it again. (But then it may be too frightening . . . . )

All of them. I would particularly suggest The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and Starship Troopers. Both are complex and beguiling and Starship Troopers was so utterly different than the movie. It wasn't a shoot 'em up at all and it had a clencher ending that was both grim and a telling comment on the so-called Human condition.

Time Anough for Love, The Cat Who Walks Through Walls.
Heinlein is one of those authors whose tales cross over if your follow enough of them.

Job: A Comedy of Errors is my favorite Heinlein. It may be hard to find, but it is way worth it.

One of his earlier works. "Farmer in the Sky", was fun. So is "Tunnel in the Sky"
I hear the book "Starship Troopers" is good, so much better than the movie.
Actually I didn't much like "Stranger in a strange land" though.
