You need to find the common denominator between them that both #'s can be divided into. : The number on the bottom of the fraction. The demoninators in this problem are 2 and 5, what is common between them? 10.

Then take each denominator and divide it in. so. 10/2 is 5. 10/5 is 2. You then multiply that number by the top number to make it the top number in the fraction, keeping the new common denominator at the bottom.

So now you have 8 and 5/10 and 4 and 4/10. So. now, you solve it. The new problem is 8 5/10 - 4 4/10.

I hope you followed that. I think its right. I haven't had math in a long time but I am a college graduate so I'd like to think that I do remember something. haha. If I'm wrong, I apologize.

1) buy a calculator that can do fractions

or,

2) first, find the common demoninator:

8 1/2 = 8 5/10
4 2/5 = 4 4/10

then subtract:

8 5/10 - 4 4/10 = 4 1/10

8 1/2 = [(8 x 2) + 1] / 2 = [ 16 + 1 ] / 2 = 17/2

4 2/5 = [(4 x 5) + 2] / 5 = [ 20 + 2 ] / 5 = 22/5

(8 1/2) - (4 2/5) = (17/2) - (22/5) = [ (17 x 5) - (22 x 2) ] / (2 x 5) = (85 - 44) / 10 = 41/10 = 4.1

:) easy ****
