They don't always. However, if you have seen this it could be for a number of reasons. 1) There was a threat and they all started looking in that direction and just kind of stayed that way. 2) The wind was strong and they found it easier to graze that way. 3) Just an odd coincidence 4) They are grazing across the field. When cows graze it can be like a lawn mower, they need to keep moving to different parts of the pasture where there is new grass. If the rancher "steered" them in that direction they would just keep slowly grazing in that direction until the grass got sparse.

I have seen our cows all lined up like their getting ready to start a race, but honestly 99% of the time they're all facing different directions. I would suspect that if they were all facing the same way there was either a strong wind or storm going on or there was some sort of predator or threat they were all trying to smell and/or see.

they like to kinda stay together, so as they eat they are moving along and to keep together they face same way most of the time
