I've had the Norton Symantec for almost a year..and it's almost up for renewal. Now that I downloaded Ad Aware, I'm wondering if I need both. Also, does Ad Aware run on its own, or do I manually start it every once in a while for the system scan ? Thanks for answering !!

no, you dont need either.

there are two ways to get a virus:
You download a file, and it turns out to be a virus, if the file runs correcly it isnt a virus, and a virus cannot be attached to it.
The other is that Internet explorer downloads the virus by mistaking it for a cookie and opening it.

The only ways you can keep from getting viruses are:
Do not download things from untrustworthy sites and
Dont use internet explorer, use Firefox, which does not allow viruses to be loaded without it asking you to download it first. If you werent trying to download something, then you know it shouldnt be asking you if you want a download, so somebody is trying to load something onto your computer.
Its that simple.
I dont have an antivirus, and I dont get viruses. I just prevent them with firefox.
Also, antiviruses only work after an infection. They cannot prevent the damage that the virus will cause before the antivirus catches it. It is much better to take preventive actions.

AVG isn't bad if you want a free anti virus program. Adaware is just an anti spyware/adware program and the free version doesn't protect you in real time. You have to manually scan.

If you want to purchase anti virus, I'd go with McAfee rather than Nortons. You can download it from their web site www.mcafee.com

Norton Antivirus and Adaware are completely different. What I would recommend would be using Windows Defender (good for spyware, adware) and AVG antivirus free edition. Both work great and your computer will be safe.

Yes, you need both.

Keep Ad Aware since it is free & doesn't expire. It will handle spyware.

Go here to get a free legal antivirus.

Download AVG here – http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_2-10503939.html?tag=lst-0-2

they do not do the same thing, if you want a free virus scan, i'd recogmend for you to download AVG if you have highspeed internet and not a very clogged down computer, then it'll only take about 3 to 5 minutes to download.

i run adware , Norton's , spybot what one don't get the other will. you need an antivirus with a fire wall. adware takes care of adware that you let on your computer. spy bot takes care of spy ware that you download.if you have all 3 you pretty well have it covered spybot , like adware is free.

Adaware is not a virus scanner. It will not stop viruses. Rather, get a free virus scanner such as AVG
