In set theory, 47 is defined to be the set {0, 1, 2, ... , 46}. Every integer is the set of all those integers below it, except 0 which is the empty set. It is an ordinal number; it also is a cardinal number, since it can't be put in 1-1 correspondence with any integer below it.
In Peano arithmetic, 47 is SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS0 , where S is the successor operation (Sn is the next integer after n) and 0 is zero.
Of course there are going to be many meanings and imports to the number; for example, it is a Lucas number and it is 5 more than "the answer to life, the universe, and everything". It can be a house number, an age, a price of an item in dollars, or a number of other things. What I gave you above is two definitions that mathematicians have given to 47, and to other integers as well.

Well I take it you watched Alias. 47 was Rambaldi's number. It kept on showing up everywhere, usually in every episode. For example: Server 47 on the 747 is what Syd used to take down The Alliance. The first guy to be doubled was in room 47. Pg 47 of the Rambaldi mauscript had Syd's pic on it. I wouldn't be suprised if Isabelle's birthday was 4/7. JJ Abrams has a thing for numbers. 47 pops up every so often in lost usually on the countdown thing something important happens at the 47 minute, and as my friend says "All the Alias-Losties have a collective fit". It's also important to point out that the 47 element is Silver.

The number 47 means you have:
4 tens which gives you 40, and
7 ones which gives you 7.
4(10) = 40
7(1) = 7
Thus we have, 4(10) + 7(1) = 47.
We can also represent it in this way:
(4 x 10^1) + (7 x 10^0) = 4.7 x 10^1
This is the scientific notation way of writing it.
Now, did I answer your question?
hehehehehehehehehe.......

In reply to Alnitaka, 47 is not the set {0,1,2,3,...,46}, but rather is the cardinal number or power of the abovementioned set. (By the way, the set is abbreviated E-sub-46 by Cantor)
