I am working in a home based computer oriented business and for the last week I have been working with a customer who is demanding, rude, vulgar, and down right nasty. He calls me names, continually curses at me and the business in general. I would like to tell him to take a long walk off a short pier, but our business deal is only half finished. How can I make him act respectful until this is concluded?

You can't. I'm really sorry that this guy is being such a jerk. Usually when that happens this way it's because the person has a real problem and don't know how to deal with it - so they take it out on people they think can't fight back.

Your best bet is to be patient and try to conclude your business with this guy as fast as possible. And then don't do business with him anymore.

Best wishes and God bless.

Make him an offer he can't refuse, that is what Don Corleone would do. If he is like this on the phone then tell him, "When your ready to carry a mature conversation feel free to call me and 'll be more than glad to speak with you." Then hang up. If he calls back even more enraged then say, "I see your not ready to talk yet." Then hang up again. This way you stay in control. If he decided to go somewhere else then dont worry about it. Your better off with out people like that.

I would hand him his half fixed pile of garbage back and tell him find someplace else. As a real estate agent I refuse to work with vulgar and obscene people. Tell him if he wants you to finish fixing it that you are to be respected at all times. Tell him you offer no second chance. If he continues hand his half fixed pile of junk back.

Trust me, there are billions of computers in the world and half of them need repairs. you are not losing out on a single computer.

Respect yourself enough to not take this from another,

I've worked on and off in customer service for years. Toughest job in the world. When a customer starts getting offensive, I'm just perfectly silent while they rant and rave. Eventually, they have to stop acting like a fool. At that point, they usually yell something like, "...are you THERE???? Are you going to HELP me?????? My calm reply is something like, "...I'll be happy to - as soon as you start acting like a civilized human being." Works every time.

unfortunately, you probably can't.
If however, you are in a contract with him, and he cant just walk off without paying you, then you can tell him simply, I dint like the way you do this this and that. I want this to be a professional dealing and do not want to hear from you until you can do that. Let him know you are going to record all future conversations with him for your business' safety and leave it at that

Fight fire with fire.
I ask them if there an expose if they say no I tell them they sure would make a great ex-, then i tell them i am not there wife or whore and do not speak to me like i am. Rude people only respect strength, they want to be put in check and need a little smack down. Oh and one other thing use really childish wording like do do head and punk that way if they do rat you out to the man"your boss they sound like a tattle tail and look like a fool, and your boss wont believe them. a few times i told people off like a kid and stuck out my tongue like a kid and raised my hands, one got the message , one told my boss and laugh at him out of the office the other started to tell but realized he sounded like a fool. have fun and smile as you smack them down.

Just kill him with kindness. I know it is hard and you want to snap, but believe me I work with the public everyday and some are real pricks.....but you are better than that. Once this business transaction is over with , no love lost.
Just hang in there and dont burn bridges you may need to cross later

You can't MAKE anyone act any way but tell him you no longer want to continue the project due to his rude behavior and offer to refund his money. Sometimes you gotta know when to cut your losses.

If you put up with that much and it bothers you, get a new job because it is part of the job.

Suck it up, Buttercup.
