Well, if you are thinking about doing it yourself, I would recommend Mammoth Cave, In Mammoth, KY for starters. They have several different excursions you can take, depending on your health and desire for adventure or just a pleasurable experience. There are literally hundreds of miles of cave passages to explore there. Some of the caves have never been explored in modern days at all. There is even a underground lake you can explore via john-boat or the like.

Then there are the not-so-public caves you can visit, like the one I did just outside of Parkersburg, WV as a boy. It is actually an old clay mine, off Rt. 47, that used to mine clay for making clay tiles at the factory nearby. Now closed, due to various reasons, lack of good clay, and certainly safety reasons, I had no reason not to explore the entire labyrinth as a 12 year old back in 1953.

Four of us entered the cave one hot summer day, my three friends went one way, I, foolishly, went another way knowing that they were just exploring a side passage and would probably be right back. That was what I was thinking as I happened to slip down a muddy incline into a lake of 52 degree “ice water” over my head. Of course my flashlight went out; I knew it wasn't safe to call out because noise always caused the roof to cave in in places, so I just climbed up the "slippery slope," as best as I could, and sat there waiting for my three friends to come back.

You do not know what is called dark until you experience a wait in a cave with no light like that. It was v e r y dark to be sure. But after a few minutes, and on schedule, they came around and we went on to exit the "cave, mine, whatever," by another exit. Was I afraid? I can't remember being in that mode. I should have been, but when you are only 12 years old, and have your whole life to live before you, you are usually just immortal at that point. Oh well. I never did tell my mom about the experience though. There is so much I never told her. Or so it seems to me.
