A hole is what it is. A hole. There is no half regardless of the shape, size, or depth of the hole.
In respects to the four men digging a half hole; what is it half of? If 4 men dig a hole that is 4 feet, then it could be said to be half the SIZE of an 8 foot hole. So the hole would have to be compared to some standard. So in the case of of 2 men digging a half hole, in relationship to the 4 men, then the answer would be 2 hours. And that hole would be half the size of the hole dug by 4 men, or 2 feet.

Is that the top half of the hole or the bottom half? Did they start in the middle and work their way up, or was it down?

if there were such a thing as half a hole i would say 1 hour. with 2 gone they wouldn't get in each others way.

Very smart .. what is "half a hole"? Well, if you are asked to gig 6 feet deep and bury yourself in that pit, and you dig only 3 feet deep and consider that enough for the said purpose, you might think that you are half done .. NOPE!! I paid you to to dig 6 feet deep, you cant come back after 3 feet and say "Master, pay me 50%" ... coz I dont pay nuthin until you dun Mistuh. Scheisse - was soll ich mir Dir machen? You would have to know how long it takes each individual man to dig (or did, I guess) half a hole. One might dig faster than the others.
