Obviously this answer is different for every individual. Some may be doing much worse. For them, we have in fact "gone to hell in a hand basket".
You'd be hard-pressed to talk them out of their misery using rosy statistics.
But collectively, over the last 5 years most Americans have done better. Don't take my word or the politicians words. If you like to do real research, I've included a couple of links from the US government Printing Office (GPO) which publishes data on every conceivable measure of US economic activity.
The punch line is that we suffered a shock to our economy with the double-whammy of the dot.com meltdown of 2000-2001 and the 9/11 terrorist attacks. But if you track the data, we've been in a strong recovery since 2001.
The answerers that intrigue me the most are those who are personally doing better than ever but who hate GWB and the Republicans so much that they dismiss their own well-being as an anecdotal irrelevancy.
They're blinded by their bias. If Bill Clinton's numbers were the same as GWB's (many are), they'd discover the opposite. They'll access these thousands of statistics I've included in the links below, and wade through the numbers searching for any measure that can affirm their view of the administration’s failure.
As Benjamin Disraeli said: “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and statistics.” You can prove anything you want with numbers. But our lives are not ruled by outside forces and statistics (influenced, yes…but not controlled).
If you're miserable, you're not a victim of the economy, or the president, or the neocons. Only YOU can do something to improve your lot in life. We are only victims if we choose to be.
Here are the numbers...do with them as you wish:

Yep improved, have a daughter in addition to my two boys and make 3 times what I did it 2000, which wasn't a ton but livable. But then again, I'm not giving Pres Bush credit, it comes from my own hard work and gumption. It wouldn't matter if a Democrat or Republican were office. I try to always make a bit more every year. But if there were less taxes and regulations, I could hire more people and grow this business quicker and the government could tax me in a higher tax bracket. HAHAHAHA.

I am afraid not. Was shopping in the mall in 2000 (much better economy), had a new car, could afford gas, had my own place. Now I shop at Wal-mart (when I have money), have a 6 year old car, and rent. Life is never better for us little guys under the Rep.

It hasn't. The drought and the economy have slowed down my business. Meanwhile the cost of utilities and college has skyrocketed.

It hasn't for anyone, and if they say it has they are crazy. That is why the Republicans are so full of excuses. Now they are just crazy and horrible when they communicate. No answers!

mine has definitely improved. It is largely through my own efforts...studying and working hard. It's the American way.

My quality of life has greatly improved.
If yours hasn't, what have you been doing? Wasting it?

Absolutely. Lower taxes, more liberties, security so far. I've benefited and know others who have.
