The term "emo" is short for "emotional." If someone is described as an "emo," teenagers generally picture a lonely kid sitting in a corner, often with their hair dyed black, and probably drooping over their eyes, with a black hoodie. The emo child may write sad poetry, or be extremely emotional, and excessively broods on how he feels about a situation.

I tend to think of it this way an "emo" is kind of like a junior high version of a "goth," in that they both like wearing black, eyeliner, and may be rather sad. However, an "emo" isn't obsessed with death and dying. There is also a genre of music called "emo." A good representation of emo music would be "dashboard confessionals" You can visit cduniverse.com, and search the band, and hear samples. Also, try searching "emo" image search engines...(on yahoo! you'll find that a lot of authors of the images seem to find "emos" annoying)

I ripped this off online because it's a better definition than I could come up with:

Punk music on estrogen. Often acoustic guitar with soft, high male vocals that dwell exessively on the singer's feelings. A form of music that diverged from punk in the '80s, the name "emo" is derived from the emotive style of the lyrics and music. The music has also spawned a subculture which conforms to certain conventions in dress such as tight sweatshirts, tight band T-shirts and horn-rim glasses. Adherents profess to exessively melancholy temperments

Emo is a subgenre of hardcore punk music. Since its inception, emo has come to describe several independent variations, linked loosely but with common ancestry. As such, use of the term (and which musicians should be so classified) has been the subject of much debate.

EMO is a Genre of soft core punk music that integrates unenthusiastic melodramatic 17 year olds who don't smile, high pitched overwrought lyrics and inaudible guitar rifts with tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans, itchy scarfs (even in the summer), ripped chucks with favorite bands, black square rimmed glasses, and ebony greasy unwashed hair that is required to cover at least 3/5 of the face at an angle.

that picture explains everything...it's honestly just the previously known as preppy kids way of saying 'where going to break the stereotype of us all being the same and being known as the jocks and cheerleaders by following a new trend in which everyone still looks the same but with tighter pants and calling it emo'

ridiculous if you ask me, just another strategic defensive move of the youth of today to prove that they too can cause a movement like those of the past and failing miserably.

okay... emo stands for emotional. they usually are guys that wear girl pants, and wear eyeliner. some cut their wrists, or other places like their legs, and listen to emo music, which is kinda like punk, but has a little bit of screaming in it and all that kind of stuff.
