Well, ol' Tom was perceived as a bit whack after his couch-punching interview with Oprah a while back. It seemed to be the beginning of the end for Mr. Cruise. Then the media went nuts about how he is "forcing" Katie to practice his religion of scientology, and apparently Katie's parent's aren't too thrilled with his actions either. The media has not been kind to the once very private actor.

Things that he is picked on for:
He is actually a short guy, probably the shortest action figure ever. He wears lifts in his shoes to give him an extra couple of inches. In the last Mission Impossible, on the bridge, they probably lowered the cars to make him look taller.
The way he dresses. It's very European, high branded stuff or what us Americans call metrosexuals.
He has publically confessed to being in a religion where they will give you more and more information, at a cost (aka money or you work for free for them). Well it's not a true religion since it's about casting away spirits anymore than vampire killers would be called a religion. Not that the creator of Scientology was a science fiction writer that was at one time a druggy.
He is also the type of guy to call the media and then complain that they follow him around.

It's because of both. Scientology is not very popular among the stars, and the fact that Katie Holmes was forced into so much stuff. She was going to wait until they were married to have a baby, but Scientology stepped in. The poor woman had to have a silent birth and can't show her baby to anyone. Tom Cruise has pretty much locked her away and so he's lost his appeal.

Tom was never hated until he took up with Katie Holmes and started acting like an ***. He was respected and loved by all before then. It all started falling apart when him and Nicole split up, but he still was pretty popular. Then he started dating a woman half his age and got her pregnant and top of all that, trashing Brooke Shields, I think the world has just had enough. I used to love him, but now, he gets on my nerves. I still think he is an excellent actor.

Because he uses his celebrity status to push his faith on others.
while someone like Mel Gibson will make a faith based movie and offer it to the masses, Tom makes mainstream films, but then uses the press for the film to push his faith on people as well as reports that he has the sets of all his films filled w/ fellow scientologists who also evangelize during filming. If he'd put his money where his mouth is (like Mel)then maybe people would accept it. Or maybe Scientology would crash and burn.

He is a controlling weirdo, past his prime. Lucky for Katie Holmes that her Dad is preparing a good pre-nup for her!

Because he loves to attract attention, he forces his family members to convert to Scientology like himself and he's crazy.
