How far should a 12 year old boy run per day? I was thinking like 3-5 miles. He wants to lose 15 pounds in about 2 weeks and keep it off. We don't want to buy anything or go to Subway or anything. No pills. The quicker he gets it off, the better. Yes, the kid is a bit chubby. He could lose the 15. He wants to get it off before school starts. Thanks!

Trust me, he would kill himself. I wouldn't let him do no 10 miles a day, even if he could. He rides his bicycle a bit, so he's not a couch tater.

In order to lose 15 pounds in two weeks, he'd have to burn 3500 more calories a day than he eats. That's a pound a day. In other words, impossible. You burn about 100 cal a mile running. Even if he ate nothing, that's still only 500 cal a day from exercise, max. Plus, if he's not used to running, he's going to be hurting bad after running 3-5 miles a day every day for two weeks, maybe even injuring himself. You need to think of a realistic goal, like maybe two pounds a week. Sorry you waited till the last minute, but what you want isn't possible. (By the way, you burn the same amount of calories walking a mile briskly as you do running a mile. It takes longer, see, so you're exercising longer.)

No, its unhealthy to loose 15 pounds in 2 weeks. The most you should loose in a month really is 12 pounds. As for the running thing, go easy on the poor kid! I'd say 2 1/2 miles.

If he is chubby and wants to lose weight you can't start him off with running 3-5 miles. It would be too much of a shock to his body. I recommend WALKING a couple of miles to start with and of course use a proper diet with many fruits and vegetables and NO fast food. The recommendation for a healthy body is 30 minutes of vigorous excesses per day, I wouldn't recommend doing too much more than that. At the max it should be 1 1/2-2 hours to lose weight.

Wow, only 12. HE wants to lose it? Weight Watchers, and no eating after 7:00pm either. About the running......2 miles of a walk and run is good, but he should ease into that too or he can do some damage. About the weight watchers frozen foods etc. I know you said you didn't want to have to buy anything but, you gotta buy food right? Make it easy on both of you....buy the frozen entrees, they're cheap and just need to be heated up. No calorie counting, or portion control/guessing either. They sell breakfasts, lunches and dinner entrees.

3-5 miles a day for 12 year old? Rediculous. If he wants to lose a little weight (I wouldn't lose too much for a 12 year old, he'll grow into it), I'd recommend simply being more active. Play some basketball, rollerblade, ride a bike...

i dont think it really matters how much you run. however, i think the easiest way to lose 15 pounds if you're a bit chubby is to run and work out a bit.
every other day run maybe for like 20 minutes at a comfortable pace while doing ab workouts. on every other days, do work outs at home.
building this muscle mass helps lose fat much quicker and acts as a catalyst to the running and ab workouts.

Well its not a matter of how far someone runs but instead its about burning fat. So I suggest to just go the minimum of 8 miles per day but also remember to burn that fat so everything will feel much better. Monitor weight content by weighing him often and modify his diet..diet is the key not how far you run especially in the short amount of time you have. :(

thats fine, as long as he doesnt do that on his first try. run a mile on the first day, 2 on the second and so on. and make sure that he drinks COLD water. it takes the body 3 calories to warm up a mouthful of water so have him do that as well
