They track online activities. Whatever websites you visit that have cookies will be "deposited" onto your harddrive and keep track of what websites you visit.

Cookies are small text files that websites put in your internet cache, usually, for the purpose of fetching data stored there and sending it to the site. It is because of cookies that you often can go to a site and not have to sign in and type your password, and because of cookies that you get the settings for a site already loaded when you go there, such as at your home page, or some other site you like and visit often. This could be considered a feature.

But, some sites are not so innocent and not so nice. They put what is known as "tracking cookies" that keep track of your surfing activities and the sites that set the cookies will then send you spam.

Anti-spyware programs are available for free that will scan your computer for these tracking cookies, and worse, to keep your computer free of the nasty ones and leave the ok ones.

One such program is AdAware from Lavasoft. And of course you can tell Internet Explorer to delete cookies and you can set it to block cookies at different levels, high, medium, and low. Just go to IE, Tools, Internet Settings, Privacy Tab for the cookie manager tool.

"Cookies – A cookie is a small bit of information that a Web server can store temporarily within your browser. A common use of cookies is to store information entered into a form so it does not need to be reentered on subsequent visits."

"The cookie file is a file that resides on the client machine. It contains data passed from web sites, so that web sites can communicate with this file when the same client returns. The web site only has access to the part of the cookie file that represents the interaction with that particular web site.

Clearly the cookie file has caused some issues with respect to privacy. Considering that as consumers, we do not know what information is being stored in the file, we should become concerned!

The cookie file was first developed in order to help sites with the transaction process of the web. Without a cookie file, web sites are not able to track a single user's path through a web site, thus a transaction that required multiple pages (as most do) would simply not be workable."

Cookies are small files dropped, by certain sites you visit, in your system. Some are useful as they "remember" you when you visit the site again...especially your settings. Some can be used to track your activity.
