Homecoming is usually over several days. Most start with 'Spirit Week' which have students show their school spirit by dressing in crazy costumes. Like clash day, decade day, pj day, and ending on friday with "color day" during which they were only their school colors (mine our green and white) people paint their faces and seriously go all out.
Then during last period on friday is the "pep rally" or "spirit assembly" From their it is to the parade which each grade has a float plus the bands play. Then it is to the game. In my case last year, it was incredibly close and exciting and everyone lost their voices from screaming so hard after my team made an amazing comeback from 21-0 to win at 27-28. Then it is to the bondfire (it's pretty cold were I live and last year there was snow even though it was only the second weekend in October)
Finally the day is over and the entire next day is spent getting ready for "the dance" when King and Queen are crowned (at my school they are always seniors who were not on prom court). It starts with dinner before the dance (reservations must be made like a year a head of time) and then pictures and then at the dance, everyone dances all night long to a usually terrible DJ and it's one of the most memorable and fun high school experiences!
P.S. Make sure you go to your first homecoming! It's the best time you'll ever have!

Homecoming, usually in the fall, celebrates the return of a school's alumni to the campus. This "celebration" usually around an American Football game, brings alumni back to campus for parties and reunions, etc. This happens at high school and college campuses.
The "celebration" has changed somewhat. The students currently enrolled in the school do the celebrating. A Homecoming "Court" is elected by the student body for the festivities. These are young people who represent the school in some way (extracurricular activities, school clubs, etc.). There is an election and the student body votes on who they want to represent them on the court for that year. (this may vary at each school on how this is done) There is a presentation of those elected to the court at Half-Time (intermission) during the football game.
Usually the next day, (or at another scheduled time) there is a formal dance where the court is presented. Students enrolled at the schools attend these dances.
I am sure these customs vary from school to school. Colleges and universities sometimes have parades for their Homecomings.
These games and dances offer a chance for alumni and their families to visit the campuses and visit old friends.

Homecoming is an annual tradition observed by many North American towns, high schools and colleges, usually in late September or October. Its purpose is to welcome back former residents and alumni, and is built around a central event, such as a banquet, football game, basketball game, or a ice hockey game.
When celebrated by schools, the activities vary widely. However, they usually consist of a football game played on the school's home football field, activities for students and alumni, a parade featuring the school's marching band, and the coronation of a Homecoming Queen (and at many schools, a Homecoming King).
Background
Towns in the United States have held annual homecoming events to welcome back former residents since the 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century universities started to create their own homecoming events to gather the alumni for reunion, celebration and convincing them to support their alma mater. Since they began, university homecomings have been centered around some sort of large game event, intended to serve as a magnet for the alumni. However not all alumni will return to the event.
The University of Illinois started the tradition of Homecoming in 1910. On October 15, 1910, the Illinois football team defeated the University of Chicago Maroons with a score of 3-0. The game is notable in that it was the focal point of the first ever organized homecoming weekend.

Homecoming Day is not common in Germany. In America it is the home football game with a dance and many activities where those who graduated from that school come home for the game, activities and dance.
