the greeks used balls of amber that they rubbed against silk to produce sparks ( static electricity ) however the theory was unknown to them and they discovered this solely by accident..

this was the precusor to the development of the "Leyden jar" some 2000 years later which is considered the original "capacitor". Once charged, the Leyden jar or "cell" could discharge electricity in the form of a current. It was invented at the university of leyden in 1745 by peter musschenbroek. The leyden cell is the first known separation of charge by human means.
