I have to go with a greyhound (I have 2)!! They are gentle, yet playful animals who also sleep about three quarters of the day away. If you like big dogs, that is. They have so much sensitivity and compassionand an accelerated ability to learn. Usually, you acquire a retired ex-racer so they are already 2 to 5 years old. If you do not have a racetrack in your state/country, then you can research for yourself and you will find ways to acquire one (from the Humane Society to your local Greyhound Adoption agency). They need homes anyway and you learn so much from them, even from their special needs. Here is the part that will clue you in to whether you can handle one of these wonderful creatures:
a) They need to be leashed at all times outdoors unless they are in a SECURELY fenced area. This can be a doozy for some people but there are owners in tall apartment buildings who take their pets outside several times per day...wooh!
b) They need extra love to help them through the bumps like housebreaking and using stairs. And just being in a comfortable house is a completely foreign experience!!
c) An application is required for each and every adoption. Things like hours spent away from home and how many children and other pets are all asked. This is not unusual for any dog but a greyhound requires a very special new family.
d) Muzzles are a good thing in the beginning.
e) Crates are a good thing in the beginning.
f) They rarely shed!!!! But they have very THIN skin and no body fat so this breed is an INDOOR only dog. They feel the heat or the cold the same as you or I.
g) They may or may not be snuggly-buggly!! Depends on the individual personality. Remember to ask the adoption group for specific temperaments. Or for a cat-safe hound. Or kid-friendly.
Thanks for reading!!
I know it sounds like a sales pitch but these guys are worth it!! Lots of people watch them race....far fewer consider providing a home for them. And, lets face it, some of the most loving families never go to a dogtrack and they need a way to find out about this opportunity too!

Well, as most of the domesticated animals have been eliminated I'd have to go with everyone on the ferret or bird option. Rabbits aren't really good for casual pets, no matter what anyone says. If you plan on keeping them outside, then sure, a rabbit's good, but inside? No. Indoor rabbits are horrible. They make so much noise you can't sleep at night; or at least mine does. Ferrets make awesome pets. They're friendly, snuggly, kind of like a mix between a cat and a dog in terms of personality. A hermit crab makes a good pet. They feel weird when they crawl over your hands, and they're kind of cool to have. very low-maintenance, too. A bird could also make a good pet, but I don't recommend parakeets. I've had four, and all of them made lots of noise. I also don't recommend getting two of the same sex. They'll kill eachother, literally. A McCaw or lovebird make good pets. But if you can manage to get a cat, then I'd say that's a better choice if you're looking for a pet that you can snuggle with. But ferrets... they're awesome. Hope I helped! EDIT;; I also recommend a sugar glider. They are absolutely adorable. They're like little chipmunk-looking things that have little wings. My friend used to have one, and it was so cute, and friendly. But they're illegal in some states, sadly.

Horses are sensitive animals. They understand emotions and are very fun pets if you enjoy to ride. Boarding fees may be exspensive, so you'll have to consider that.
Cats are intelligent, indepent beings. They enjoy to lounge around the house when adults (3 and up), when they're young they enjoy to PLAY and are hyper and rambunctious. When about 4 monthes old they can be left at home alone for more than two days. I advise you keep your cats indoor. They may be your perfect pet, but they can be shy or very independant. You'll just need to give them they're time.
Dogs are playful, good animals. They enjoy daily walks and play as much as they can. They're fun pets and most (labs, retrievers, boxers, ect.) are good with children. But they CANNOT be left home alone for more than a day.
Fish are very simple to care for. A simple daily feeding and weekly tank cleaning and you're done. They come in many exotic colors and shapes. There are even NO vet bills.
If all these pets are still to hard you should just settle for sea monkeys (small brine shrimp) they continue to live and breed. They last pretty long and don't really need to be feed to much(obviously). If they all die, no big deal just get a new package. They even have keychains you can keep them in and carry them around.

Guinea Pigs, ours are in a big dog cage in the room and are part of the family. People who keep them outdoors are missing out on watching their separate personalities develop.

i believe if you adopt one from a shelter. They need forever home and you're willing to give them that. this way you have your choice of either small or a large dog. one thing you should remember about cats. They give you affection when they want to.
