I really think that depends on the zoo. Alot are upgrading their facilities so that the animals are in as close an environment as possible to what they should be. But alot are cruel.
I once saw a 'Sun' bear on his own in a concrete enclosure. His enclosure was out of the sun and he just sat on his haunches rocking and rocking. It broke my damn heart!!!

Both, I am a proud zoo member.
It does seem cruel some of the animals seem so not right.
On the other hand though animals in the zoo have it alot better than in nature. Most are soon going to be extinct or dangerously close except for zoo's help. Every zoo I have been to has been a great learning experience. If it were not for mans overtaking of the earth we would not need zoo's. They have become a necessity if we are to save some wildlife. It is a catch 22.
They are both good and evil.

It depends on the zoo really. Take San Diego Wild Animal Park for instance. The habitats are top notch. The staff are highly trained. And they have programs that release zoo-raised animals back into the wild.
When I was a little girl, I had to do a report and I chose the subject of marine biology. I called my local zoo up and they allowed me to come down and meet with a zoo keeper and a sea lion! I got all sorts of questions answered and got to pet a sea lion that was bigger than I was at the time. It was one of the most educational experiences I had as a child.
There are zoos that forget their purpose, and animals suffer for it, but I think the initial purpose of zoos is rather lofty. There are many species that only exist in zoos now, and they work hard at re-introducing these animals into the wild, both by raising the animals and protecting their habitats.
I think if zoo visitors gave more feedback, and if more companies donated to their local zoos, that the level of quality would go up dramatically.
I love zoos, and hope they never go away, but I'd be the first one to throw a fit if my local zoo started slacking.

I agree with some of the others, it depends on the zoo. But for the most part they are a very good thing as most of the animals are not able to function in the wild and would have to be put down with out the zoo as a home! Also zoos foster education about animals and programs for breeding endangered animals. So over all I would have to give zoos a thumbs up!

Both. It is great for people to see and learn about an animal they would normally not see in their lifetimes. Perhaps they can learn to respect and appreciate the animals they see at zoos and will seek their preservation in the wild. People should crack down on bad zoos, there are so many terrible instances of abuse and neglect. It's great when an institution really cares about the welfare of it's inhabitants. They are to be applauded. It's unfortunate that most of the specimens in zoos are no longer safe in their natural habitats. When I think how depressing it is that a wild animal has to be in a cage or pen at a zoo I remind myself that their natural homes are being destroyed and many species are hunted. I guess we have to make comprimises, and be vigilant so that zoo animals are given as good a life as possible in captivity.

Good zoos, educational and actually help to restore endangered species to the wild.
Poor zoos, the animals should be let out of the cages and the keepers and owners put in and the keys thrown awayth

Bith of both, some are good, some are bad. Many years ago i used to silently cry over the wolves in London Zoo. And the ice bear enclosure was grey. It was beyond me why they never painted it white. Promised myself never to set foot in a zoo again.
Safari park/wildlife parks are better. Gives the animals some more space but still i find watching the penguins distressing.
My little one loves animals of all kinds and without the wildlife/safari parks she would never see anything other than domesticated animals and creepie crawlies.

Well, some people say that zoos are horrible becuz they keep animals in cages and their not supposed to be in cages but a lot of animals at zoos are there becuz they won't be able to survive in the wild (EX: If a bird got attacked and couldn't fly) and/or they are endangered and are trying to restore the species.
