I keep seeing post after post, here, where "rich people" are denegrated. I also see it in TV ads, in bad novels, in the newsaper (especially the NY Times), and just about every other place you can thnk of. I'm ready to open a jar of peanut butter and have a pop-up flag tell me that "the rich" want the working stiffs of America under the heels of their boots.

AND YET....everyone here dreams of being a millionaire.

Can anyone offer an explanation, however bizarre? Thank you so much. I'll be quiet, now.

Victory, it's because of people like this:

Kenneth L. Lay

Need I say more. I know not all rich people are like him, but it's people like him that, unfortunately, give rich people a "bad bad" name.

I don't want to be a millionaire because I think that kind of money would bring more difficult complexities into my life than what I already have, and would make me too materialistic. I'm a really nice sweet woman and just want to stay that way. However, just having a little more like winning $500,000 would be nice. Just enough to get a few things I need and want, but not so much that it would bring the problems I just mentioned.

Victory, since you asked this question and claim to be financially independent and over educated, just out of curiosity what is your yearly income and compensation? We're all anonymous here. How about adding it in as an additional detail, or after you pick the best answer as an extra comment. I grossed close to $45,000 last year.

It is easier for people to use others as an excuse for their problems than get up off their bums and do something about it themselves.

Now rich people, in the main, have gone out and done something and made some money, they have nurtured it and made it grow through hard work and effort on their part. In dong this they have probably employed some less energetic peope who see themselves as victims of the rich oppressor who sits on high telling them what to do.

Alas it is a viscious if simple circle if you work hard you benefit if you dont you dont.

Alas some rich folks have neither the wherewithall or the motivation to make it on their own and live of daddy's or mummies hard earned. They are the ones that most folks venom is vented toward and rightly so, they have in the main brought nothing to society and are unlikely to do so.

Rich in cash is not everything and some of the happiest people i know have very little in the way of material wealth but are nonetheless rich in many other ways.

It seems that too much emphasis is put upon being wealthy in cash terms and the easy route is the preferable way. Alas HARD WORK is the only true route to monetary wealth unless you innherit it or wish to take the criminal route which always ends in tears..

Only the materialistic people want to become millionaires.
I do not want to be rich, but it would be nice to have enough money to help others live their lives without worrying where their next meal came from.
And it is sad to know there are so many billions of dollars 'saved for a rainy day' when it is pouring outside, in the real world. When I see people like Paris Hilton or Rubert Murdock, who have all the material possessions anyone could dream of, and yet they are miserable with their free time and lack any sense of being part of the world's demise. These are the kind of people that summarize the 'filthy rich'.
Those that use their money to open organisations, charity funds, and other 'not-for-profit' enterprises are ok in my book. But there aren't enough of them in this world.
If you are rich and don't know what to do with your excess money, don't donate to a Mercedes Benz-driving charity organisation, open a new one that employs millions of out-of-work, unexperienced people so there is less unemployment and more aid is spread around the world. Or fund educational programs, writing grants, research grants or start a new News group that could finally Outfox Fox (i.e. News Corp). In other words, do something useful with the money instead of all those liposuctions you get from not lifting a finger a day in your life!

think of it this way....

if you have money you have the means to do more than those who don't

now if you do good with your money and help others and don't brag and make others feel awful for not having money... then you are a good person and you get no publicity... ie you are boring

now if you have money and act like a selfish brat and train (not teach but train) your family and friends to be the same way... you get publicity and you get bored and you do things that are not the best....

now there are a lot of good people out in the world, rich, poor and in the middle

but there are also a lot of snotty self absorbed blowhards that need to be smacked up side the head with a 2x4 of reality... and not all of them are rich... just the famous ones get talk about most

I don't want to be rich..so many different problems come from having money...I would however like to have enough money so if I was laid off from my job and I couldn't find another one right away, I wouldn't have to be totally stressed out. In other words, I'd like to live a comfortable life...nothing more, nothing less...now ppl might think I'm full of ****...but...my parents are very well off...I see their problems and they can keep them. I do come from a family that believes in making your own way, nothing is handed to any of the kids...I do work for everything I've got...which isn't much..lol..

You have, of course, pointed out a contradiction in people's thinking. I think the reason is a "if you can't beat them, then join them" mentality--since no one seems likely to persuade the rich to spread the wealth, then we must try to be like them.

Not everyone dreams of being a millionaire...A million is small change. Only a billionaire of trillionaire would be worth the effort, perhaps. I wouldn't want to be a millionaire anyway. It's too much trouble. It would require too much of my time--I prefer time to money.

It's all envy. People deal with the fact that others are rich and they are not by turning the rich into monsters. But, of course, they still want to be rich.

And doorknob morons think it's cool to slam the rich.

Less than ten percent of our nations population are filthy rich to the point that they have no clue what it is to be a working class individual.
But of those ten percent, they control ninety percent of our nations power over its citizens.

Just like when the nation was first founded those in power do not want to give any power to anyone else for fear of losing what they have.

I bet I just confused you even worse!

Envy, jealousy, misdirection. There is nothing wrong with being rich,it is how you got it and special treatment that is the bone of contention. Peace.
