They get confused and get headaches. You're actually just not supposed to tap on the glass, pointing shouldn't do anything. The tapping creates a sonic wave inside hte tank that we aren't able to hear, and it disturbes the fish seeing as though that sonic wave hits their head and eardrums, which does cause headaches, or worse - mental damamge.

You can point or even wave at a fish. I doubt that they would even notice you. One thing that you do not ever want to do is tap or hit the aquarium. The percussion of hitting the tank sends shock waves which frightens the fish. In the wild, a current of water coming at a fish tells it that a predator wants to eat it. What happens is that a fish will slam it's body into the side of the aquarium, trying to escape.
Did you know that when people shoot fish in the water, it is the percussion that kills the fish, not the bullet?
Lets say that you are in a house, and something big is coming at you. You run as fast as you can to escape this unknown monster. What would happen to your body when, in your panic in fleeing, you slam into a wall. You could die from internal injuries when you stop suddenly.
A lot of aquariums are made out of glass, and glass does break. Aquariums are held together with a thin seam of silicon. By tapping on the tank, water can work it's way under the seam. Nobody wants to wake up in the morning and have more water on the floor then in their tank.
A fun thing to do is to teach your fish to take food out of your fingertips. I was told that Oscars will learn to do this, and even goldfish can learn too.

It freaks them out. Being freaked out enough can kill them. I work at a pet store and I see people tap on tanks and intentionally try to scare the fish. I wish I had a ruler so I could swat them when they do that. It's mean and very immature.

I thought you're not supposed to tap on the glass. It can put them into shock or something, not good for them anyway.
