Part depends on what is important to you. If you want a player that is compatible with every product under the sun such as car stereos, home theaters, TVs, etc then choose the ipod. Companies are going nuts to have an ipod port put on their product. Some will allow you to control the ipod from their remote. If not then choose Creative. They are less expensive, hold more for the money, sound great, and are easy to use. They can still be used with most other products, but there's just not a dedicated connection for them. I got a Nomad w/40Gig with a transmitter for my car for under $250 from circuit city, and it works great. I got way more room per dollar than if I got an ipod, and I like the interface better. Get a larger HD than you think you need. Most of the people I know with 4MB ipods say it is not enough room. Good luck in your choice.

Creative Zen. Especially if comparing the iPod 30GB to the Creative Zen Vision M.
Reasons why the Creative Zen Vision M is superior to the iPod 30GB:
1) Longer battery life for video (4 hours for ZVM vs 2 hours for iPod)
2) Better video display (262,000 colors vs 65,000 for iPod)
3) Supports subscription music. Fill the player with a virtually unlimited number of songs for as little as $10 a month. I have over 1200 subscription songs on my ZVM and it'll hold about 5000 subscription songs. That's less than a penny a song per month. iTunes charges 99cents. iPod does not support subscription music.
4) Lower prices on individual song tracks if you want to purchase them. Prices of 79cents, 88cents, or 99cents a song vs 99cents a song on iTunes.
5) Easy to use UI. My 7 year old can use it.
6) FM radio and recorder
7) Voice recorder

The Zen Microphoto has an advantage that it is small, lightweight, and it has a user replaceable rechargeable battery, rather than a built-in battery.
The Zen V Plus was just rated as a better value than the iPod by C|Net.
