It seems like a lot of kids are obsessed with drinking (and weed/smoking/drugs but thats another topic). Why. I've drank with my friends on many occassions (15 plus-intoxicated mayb 12 of those times), and I'm sorry but I don't enjoy it at all. The sickness, the taste of the many choices of alchol, the best part is the slight buzz after your first 2 drinks but thats not even that great. I view drinking as a waste of time, and many people do it (and I know it sounds cliche) to look cool. I understand that some people do it when they're older to socialize and thats cool, but i'm talking as a way of life it's dumb and foolish and immature. But what I wanted to ask is, if I don't drink in college or for the rest of my life (I'm beginning to consider this option) is that a big deal? Will I regret it. I think watching a baseball game is fun, I think playing flag football with your friends is fun, I think drinking is not fun. Am I wrong.

Definitely not a big deal, you will be suprised how many people will respect that decision. Just carry around a bottle of water when you go to parties.

You're starting college, so it's going to be normal for most of the kids there to want to "go out and get wasted maaan". A kids first taste from home and a huge slice of freedom does that to you. Well, yes, it's true....kids are going to pressure you, but it's actually very acceptable to not drink, in fact, I think you're RA will respect it. Less trouble to give them. It's a phase though, honestly, I'm glad I did it and got over it, because college just might not have been the same. I lived for the nights going out on the weekends to frats and house parties as a freshman, but when I was a soph, I settled down, started dating someone serious and lost all interest in the social scene. But when I was about to graduate, I realized, I didn't go out enough and wanted to make every effort to do it in the end cause I sure as heck can't do it in the real world. Bottom line: college is the final playpen, live your life now because it gets harder when you get into the world and you'll never has as much freedom as you did in college. They are some of my most missed memories. Even if what you do is the abstract of what everyone else is doing, who cares, do it anyway. Make yourself happy or you'll regret it!

It is not a big deal, not if you hang out with real friends. I think you are going to experience a lot of peer pressure though. I was the same thing and didn't think drinking was fun at all, so I often volunteered to be a designated driver, and my friends would pay for drinks in return. But it's hard to go hanging out with people who are having a great time, getting smashed, and laughing at stupid jokes that you don't get because you're perfectly sober. Morally speaking you're in the right, but I think you will have a tough time with it. My advice is to make friends with like-minded people. There will be some.

The last time I got drunk was the night I got out of the Army. I was two years older than you are now and I swore I would never do that again. Loosing control just didn't appeal to me anymore and the next day really wasn't worth it. Don't stop drinking, just drink less. You can make a bourbon on the rocks last two hours, just ask for more ice as it melts. Drink gin & tonic with just enough gin in it to stink up your breath and those around you won't have a clue you're still sober. Enjoy college.

Yea, drinking is not for everyone. Sometimes it helps you loosen up for a social occasion, sometimes it helps you get smashed and to quit worrying about tomorrow.
Drinking is fun until it becomes a crutch.
Might I suggest Bacardi or Jager, two of my personal taste favorites.

hang in there. alot of colleges have dorms that are strictly for people that dont want their lives run by alcohol. It's hard staying away, but sure is worth it..think any of the Duke guys now wish they had not been at that party drinking that night? Unintended consequences are just waiting for regular drinkers.
