I'm not trying to start some ugly debate ... I just honestly want to understand.

It seems to me that if everyone just left them alone on the little strip of land that they have left, that there could be peace. From the news that I hear or read, it seems like the Israelis are usually only trying to defend themselves.

First and foremost - Thank you for the Charlotte Mason philosophy of education you left for my "philosophy of education" question. Best I've seen yet! I didn't see a way to contact you, so decided to this way.

Regarding your question: I think on the far left it is this idea that Israel is the last vestige of European imperialism, which may be true if we completely accept all post WWII boundaries (except of course when European powers GIVE BACK lands to indigenous peoples) as sacrosanct. Regarding Israel trying to defend itself: I think some would argue their campaigns into South Lebanon (not this incursion, but older, arguably less provoked attacks: for instance the one in which former PM Ariel Sharon arguably committed war crimes) and their desire to hold on to settlements gained during the 1967 war are not acts of simple defense. The very act of building settlements outside of traditioal boundaries is regarded as profoundly provocative by many in Palestinian circles. Remember, the last intifada was started by Ariel Sharon visiting a holy Palestinian site. Was this an act of defense?

Don't get me wrong, I am half-Jewish and pro-Israel for the most part. Palestinians will never let go of Jeruselum: Barak offered Arafat almost everything at their White House summit, (albeit a swiss cheese map) but Arafat would not accept it, mostly because limited control of the holy city.

Palestinians are desperately poor: their only weapons are their own bodies strapped with bombs. Israel is a modern liberal democracy with an army that rivals all. This leads to the whole "Palestine/Lebanon whoever" is an underdog. So as to this "little strip of land" -- the mere occupation of this is extremely offensive to Palestinians. Heard of "right of return?" Well that's the idea that Israel proper was once in the hands of the Palestinians and in 1948 they were forcibly removed. Notwithstanding this Biblical idea that this is the "chosen land" for the "chosen people" -- most Arabs and those on the left in Europe and elsewhere get profoundly upset about the whole thing.

At the same time, I think members of most minorities, lovers of democracy, etc. would appreciate the one oasis of freedom and democracy in the entire middle east. For us to keep them as an ally is an absolute must.

Thanks again for the great philosophy of education!

It's not about hating Israel - it's about holding the government Israel responsible for human rights abuses the same way Arab terrorists must be held responsible. The government of Israel treates the Palestinians horribly and consistantly kills civilians. Just to give you a little history - before 1945 Israel had been Arab territory for more than 2,000 years. The west did not have the right to give away other peoples' land. The UN divided Palestine into Arab and Jewish territories and then after subsequent wars Palestinians were left with no country because Israel took it all. There needs to be 2 states with the Palestinians getting Gaza and the West Bank and the 2 states sharing Jerusalem. Keep in mind also that U.S. news is heavy biased in favor of Israel.

This hatred for Jews goes back to the days of Christ. We can't change the past. There are a lot of religions out there that have a book called the Koran that teaches that Jews are basically the scum of the earth. That is not all that book teaches...it teaches that all Christians and Jews be either converted or killed. They feel Israel is the cause for all their misfortunes in life. Their God teaches hate ours teaches love. They say they have the same God as us but in reality they believe in only one God as we believe in The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (the holy trinity) They believe we are pagans believing in more than one God. They don't understand the one are three and the three are one. I wish we could do something to help them understand they are being brainwashed. They (Muslims in the Middle East) have grandmothers who hold hand guns into the air! When was the last time you saw your grandmother hold one gun let alone two? It's so hard for us to comprehend. The U.N. also has a lot to do with this conflict as well, because they forgot to give a piece of land to the Palestinians. I can understand their feelings of hatred towards Israel, but I can also understand Israel's plight as well.

And on the other hand, you wouldn't believe how much love many non-Jewish and non-Israeli people feel for the beautiful state of Israel! Yet, there will always be ignorants who will talk nonsense such as 'the Israelis invaded Palestinian land'. Yeah, right! For those who were asleep at history classes, the Jewish people have lived in today's Israel and surrounding areas for at least about four thousand years! They didn't just come there after the Holocaust!

I am unbiased just to let you know. Not Christian Jewish, muslim or israeli/palestinian.

They hate Israel because it was rightfully the arab's land. but then, the west needed an entirely jewish country to send holocaust victims to. So it took a small strip of land in the Holy Land and capture it and gave it to Israel. These are old issues but still relevant issues. Another reason is that the arabs attack the Israelis and then the Israelis retaliate or vice versa. And Tamil, Nicole, farley, and juju WTF are you talking about? The quoran does not teach violence. I kno many muslims who are respectful, nonviolent people yet they are devout. Have you ever read the Koran? No you have not. They have. Don't talk about something unless you know for sure it is true. stop stereotyping. I HATE STEREOTYPES.

The Muslims will never leave Israel alone. Islam is an extreme religion that doesn't value nor leave room for non-Muslims. It's been war since Israel was created, and it always will be. The U.N. created Israel in 1948 and, literally, the next day it was invaded by Iraq, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Iran.

Have you heard of the Palestinians? Just imagine you are one, living a peaceful life with your family, and a group of people came from thousands of miles away with guns and weapons, killed your family, massacred your people and took over your house your country, your identity and changed the real history with a fabricated one. To justify all of this, they say, god promised us this land....would you just give up..if you were.. a Palestinian?

Because Jacob saw the stairway to Heaven there. Also, God (Yeshua/angel of His presence) exalted His name to Israel & blessed Him.

The surrounding nations are jealous of Israel. When Israel withdrew from Lebanon (Aprox. 6 yrs ago), then Gaza (When Huricane Katrina hit us), now West Bank it opens up the way for terrorists to attack them from those places.

Surrounding nations are calling for Israels destruction, and they'll keep attacking in hopes to do it. God won't let them do it though. Israel just needs to retake the land promised to them from God. You can not trust an Islamic nation or Islamic terrorists to keep promises. In the Koran, you can lie or kill for the cause of Islam.

Israel isn't the Israel it is soppose to be because they haven't humbled themselves before their God & repented of every wicked way (including their part, as a people, in the crucifixion of the Messiah that took place around 2000 years ago), and God will heal their land. They have called on God somewhat obviously because there is an Israel again. But Jeshua Messiah has better plans for them. Yeshua said that they would not see Him in Jerusalem again until they accept Him.

Mr./Ms. wise indian: Jesus loves you too. The Palistinian people ancestory started Egyptian according to the oldest history book. The Caanite people were the people of the land now called Israel. The Palistinians are called Philistines in the bible & they were close to & fighting Israel during old testament times also. Israel lost the land because they did the worst sin imaginable by going after the gods of neighboring nations. God promised to restore them there land because God promised them that land & He is a God that keeps His promises. It was restored to them after the Holocost. The Israel people (There are many Messianic Jews throughout History & wrote the old & new testaments. Isaiah has many prophecies of the Messiah.) are actually close to accepting Yeshua as the Messiah because the Good News message, that We can be reconciled to God, is being preached & published around the globe & now in Israel.

Right now that land is the Lords. The world needs to figure it out, including Israel.

Also, the Koran does teach violence. It writes to kill the unbeliever (Not believing in Allah) find them where ever they are. That is how peoples of other nations or those that fall away are treated if they don't accept Islam or repent of not believing. Since Christians & Jews are people of the book, they just need to live subservient to Muslims, & pay the extra tax & to be humbled in the process. If they don't do this, then it could mean the death sentence. The Hadith, also written by Mohammed, writes the death sentence to those who fall away. They Have 3 chances to repent. That is also Islamic Shariah Law. Hamas, etc... are Islamic Jihadists & have Islamic law permission to kill enemies of Islam, civilians, make false treaties, plunder, etc. for the cause of Islam. You can trust them 0%.

To be an enemy of Islam is just to confess Jesus Christ Lord of ones life, that He is the Only begotten Son of God, & accept His dieing on the cross, bearing our sins, for the remission of our sins; and believing in heart He raised from the dead for our justification. Why, because in the Koran it is written that Jesus didn't do this. One is calling Mohammed a false prophet by asking Jesus in ones heart & believing what is written in the bible.
