They didn't press charges or anything. but I was losing sleep over it the other day..

I worked for a summer internship at 14/hr for the summer. At that point, they asked me to work extra during the school year.. I tried my best but come Jan.. I couldn't do it. At that point, they realized they had overpaid me.. I had no clue! They asked me to come in to compensate for around $1000 overpay. (they thought I was coming in once a week.. but I was only coming in every 2nd week)

I just brushed them off and ignored their calls.. I had no more time to work there! It was a 2 hour bus ride to get there.. I had enough!

First the whole point of being an intern is the learning experience. I hope this adventure has been educational. First you didn't take your job seriously enough to keep track of how you were being paid or you would have realized that you were being overpaid. This does happen.

You need to verify to your own satisfaction whether or not you were actually overpaid or not. If you were overpaid you need to either pay them back in cash or in hours. How much you'll be inconvenienced is not really relevant. Either you accepted payment for work you didn't do or you didn't that is really all that is relevant.

You've already missed the opportunity to demonstrate that you are a dedicated worker. Don't blow the opportuntiy to demonstrate that you are honest.

From what is presented, your ex employer made a mistake of overpaying you. You are certainly not in the right if you knew that you were overpaid and didn't do anything. You are certainly not in the right, knowing now that you were overpaid and just brushed them off and ignored their calls.
If you lost sleep over it the other day and no more, I am afraid you have lost your moral compass.

You calling "brushing them off and ignored their calls" worried? I don't know how they overpaid you, but you certainly did nothing there to fix the problem. You should lose sleep.

You should pay back the money or go out of your way to work it off. Anything less would be dishonest and the fact that you are losing sleep tells me that you already know that.....and that deep inside you are a decent and good person.

I tend to think you owe them either some money or work but legally I don't know. You could ignore it. It is their mistake but they may decide to get their money back in court and then you might have to pay court costs which would amount to a lot more.

If they think they overpaid you that is their mistake. They have no recourse. Ignore them and chalk it up to a life experience.
