There is hardwood floor underneath. It seems like if the floor is sinking. My bigest problem is that I do not know how to repair this area that goes from a straight to about 1 1/2in deep at the wall.
This area is about 2 feet wide by 6 feet long.

definately get that area checked out by a pro,but if you prefer not to solve that problem you can do this to level that area out,cut 2x4's to the width of your space, then mark them an 1 1/2 in. on one end down to nothing on the other end and cut them, which will give you wedge shaped pieces , cut enough of them to place about every 6 to 8 inches down the lenthof your space, glue ,screw or nail in place cover with at least 5/8in. plywood and secure in place then cover with your new flooring.

You need to find out why your floor is sinking. What is directly underneath the area that is depressed? You may need to jack the floor up from underneath. A laminate floor requires a minimal variation in flatness, something like 1/4" over 8 feet (check the specifications on the package) and your dip is way above what is permissible.

I did a ceramic tile floor once in a kitchen where the floor sank about an inch just inside the door to the outside. I brought it back up to level by using a 20-ton jack and pushed the floor joists back up and added supports in the basement. You may need to do something similar.

In another situation I had to install a Pergo floor in a living room and found an uneven depression right across the middle of the room. I evened that out by building up the depression with fiberglass resin and sawdust which created a rock-hard permanent patch.

Try a levelling compound that is compatible with the substrate.
If the hardwood floor has a varnish or finish on it, it may have to be mechanically ground off to let the levelling compound bond to the substrate.
If the floor is sinking, then it would be best to consult a trade qualified professional. A sinking floor usually means a bigger problem may need urgent attention.

You would have to be more descriptive but try this...do you have a basement or is the foundation slab(concrete) or is the foundation on blocks? If it is concrete then it is easy fill it in..If not your job is way beyond what the average person can do you probably need a contractor but if your ambitious then you have to replace the supports for the flooring just to get the floor even then
add a subfloor layer then pot the hardwood flloring over that!!

You'd have to put down a new subfloor. Which, if your floor is sinking, you're going to need to find out WHY. Is your foundation crumbling?

Laminate flooring may look nice, but not when the house tumbles into the cellar.
