Why do you have the instinct to live? If there's no God, no post-mortal life, then why do you have the will and instinct to preserve your life? Is it to be happy? Well, if when you're dead that's it, no more, you wouldn't even exist to notice not being happy would you? Seems to me death shouldn't matter to you if you wouldn't exist on the other end of life to know what you may have missed the chance of experiencing by dying. It seems to me there is a gut instinct within you, despite what you choose to SAY you believe, that says there IS something after this life and you would have the chance to regret losing your life earlier than you think you should have. Hopefully you're able to understand exactly what it is I'm trying to say. I'm curious to see what your response is to this type of logic.

Agnostics believe in a higher power.

Atheists do not believe in anything but themselves.

But your logic is great.

Try really hard to think outside of the box. I'm assuming that you're christian, but do you look outside what your preacher tells you or do you accept it in blind faith? I believe there is a god, I DO NOT believe in the church and all the bigotry and human nature induced crap that goes along with it. If you're strong in your faith you wont be affraid to research your "logic" on a non-christian level. I'm sure that you'll just write it off anyway.

I believe that life is about giving to my fellow man. That makes me happy and gives me a sense of self. I don't need the promise of an after life to make me want to live! I have fabulose friends and fantasic family. I work and study and when university is over I will give back to my community. My existance is based on what I can give...Maybe you're more concerned with what you will recieve. There's a better question for you to ponder.

Well... I consider myself to be an Agnostic but I believe your question is geared more towards Atheists, because Agnostics do believe in a higher power. I just personally do not believe in organized religion thus I choose not to call my "God" Jesus Christ, Allah, etc... I don't believe that after death there is nothing else because energy is never destroyed only transformed. I also have plenty of reasons to live because even if I was an Atheist, there still are plenty of people whose lives I can inspire while I am here on earth, even if I thought there was nothing else afterwards.....

I don't think your type of "logic" is logical. Just becaue we think there's nothing beyond this life doesn't mean that we would give up this life earlier unless it was horrible or painful to us. Some of us just choose to live and let live without hurting anyone else and just make the best of what we have at the present instead of hoping for something magical to come our way after wards.

Your "logic" really isn't very logical.

Just because someone doesn't believe that there is any magical event after life doesn't mean that's what drives them to stay alive. Even if I believed that there was a heaven after life on earth, it doesn't mean I'd want to hurry up and die, or even not mind dieing sooner just to go there.

Some of us just like our own lives well enough that we don't have to fantasize about them being any better after our own deaths.

Survival values are for the here and now. wether we live on after we die is not only an unanswerable question but really quite pointless. And you have no clue about what agnostics think. on top of all that why is a faith base religion question on the philosophy page

I think you first need to learn the difference between an agnostic and an atheist.
An agnostic believes many things may be possible.....an atheist believes that this is all there is. No God. No afterlife, or heaven.

You see, this absence of logic is what the religions use. Your are unable to understand how "agnostics" think. I am not going to even try to convince you about the opposite. The reason is simple. Even if i manage to make you see what we -agnostics- see.. You will suddenly transfer your self in a state of anomie.

"Why do you have the instinct to live?"

does your dog run out into the street from lack of meaning?

why do theists assume only God grants signifigance...
God condemns you to your fated choices,
you burn in heavan by fiat.

Why do you believe in something that makes absolutely no sense?

I LIVE here, what do you do... besides wait for death everyday?
Pietist, saint, apocolypse monger. Die already, kill your retarded family on the way out too.
