Our A/C stopped working. At first it sounded like it was trying to start the blower but it wouldn't turn over. We thought the capasitor needed to be replaced so I put a new one in and it sounded even stronger when it wanted to start for a few trys. Now I get no sounds at all when I turn on the unit. The breaker is not tripped.

The other replies were correct. My two cents worth, to find out if it is the blower or compressor is simple. On your thermostat, set it to FAN only. If it blows air, then the blower motor is working. The blower is the fan on the inside unit of your house. If you hear the humming sound while standing at the outside unit (condenser), then it's the the compressor (maybe $900) to replace. One last thing it could be, is the fan motor on the outside unit. On some units if the fan doesn't start when ac is called for, the compressor won't start.

Assuming you have a split system (air handler on the inside of the house) you may have a bad blower motor or transformer. Possibly a control voltage problem but with the sounds you are describing it sounds like a bad blower motor. Also capacitors are rated in micro-farads. You need to use the right capacitance or one that closely matches. If it you have an apm meter and can safely do so you can check the amp draw on the wires leading to the blower motor. Dont forget the furnace contol board is also tied in with the system.

you got a bad motor dude. not really a cheap fix, but if you can get the old one removed from the unit, you can take it to a heat/ air co. to match up possibly. you can expect to pay 100.00 up for the motor. you might consider purchasing a window unit to get you by till you get on your feet! good luck!

I hate to say it but it sounds like it could be your compressor.

That is a service call for sure.
