In my opinion, there are two kinds of goths. The two really don't have much to do with each other as far as motives go.

One is the teenage kind. They don't know why there are wearing what they're wearing, why they're listening to what they're listening, or what being goth is about. They're goth because they're depressed and/or they want to fit in while standing out. For them, hopefully, its a phase.

For real goths, which might include a teenager or two, being goth is just the way they are. The label and the style are artificial, but the core of being goth is nothing new. Goths see and deal with the world differently than most people. They see the evil and pain in the world and accept it as readily as the good. They are true realists, and are often artistic, emotional, intelligent, non-violent, and have a wicked sense of humor.

Being Gothic is definetely not a phase. If someone dresses goth but isn't goth it might be a phase but otherwise it is not a phase.

Goth is not wrist slashing, being depressed, dressing in black, being a misanthropist or whatever. Its much more than that. Gothic pople are some of the only people in the world who can take the darker aspects of life as a beauty and not fear them.

Edgar Allen Poe is sometimes called the "Father of Modern Goth" and he was passed middle aged when he died. Jessicka, from the band Scarling, is verging on fourty but still goth.

Some people may go through a childish goth phase just as they could go through any phase- such as punk, preppy, business woman, nerd, super christian, freak, sleep around- whatever. And these people still exist into there older ages. How can someone say that 'goth' is a childish phase, but still advocate the nerds- who pretty much in there mid-forties rule the world?

(btw, I am a goth, a christian, and a geek so no offense is meant by any of this)

Definately a phase. The best thing a person could do is getting involved in the best phase, the right phase. Something you can learn good things from. Sports phase. Religous phase(if you dig that kind of thing). Even a geeky phase(good grades in school).

Pretty much a stupid lil phase some morons go through. They also have stupid view and think every things negative. They all tend to look alike too. In the end be who you wanna be for your own reasons, most gothics are just following some stupid trend.

Hey....... Watch It ! I happen to like Goth and I am not young by most standards. I have a few Goth friends, some older than I.
Goth doesn't mean you have to slash your wrists.
The actual meaning of Goth is : relating to the Goths or their language;Germanic; Teutonic; relating to the Middle Ages; medieval;an architectural style derived from medieval Gothic;
relating to painting, sculpture, or other art forms prevalent in northern Europe from the 12th through the 15th century.
;relating to a style of fiction that emphasizes the grotesque, mysterious, and desolate.
I like the style and physical appearance of Goths.
All bikers aren't alike, all blacks aren't alike, all Catholics aren't alike and all Goths aren't alike, Dude. Chill.

It's a phase. Don't all teens go through phases? Don't most people, both young and old go through phases?

I think it is a dangerous phase. I would be concerned about what was going on in the life of the child.
