I would like to write a book about a rather infamous crime that happened in the '70. although I am acquainted with a few people either involved or affected by the crime, the project would still require a great deal of investigation. Are there any publishers who will pu t up money for such a book, based on a written proposition and/or synopsis?

You'd have to write a non-fiction proposal and get it sold first, then you get an advance. But you already have to know how the book will be laid out, etc. Get an agent first after you write a proposal.

edited to add: I cant seem to return your message. Here's what i wanted to say to clarify the above:
Hi. :-) What I meant is you need to create a proposal that consists of a sample chapter, outline, etc. Research how to do NF proposals. ( I do fiction, so I'm not the best for advice on the actual proposal) Once you have this perfected, you query agents. The Agent is the one that gets you a publishing deal. Agents can be hard to get too...but they are So worth it. Check out www.agentquery.com and find ones that represent fiction or true crime. True crime books may be written in more of a novel form.... so who knows if publishers like the whole thing done....and agent would be able to guide you on this one.

A writer's group is a great resource, 'specially if you can find one that focuses on your genre.
