The 808 is actually the TR-808. It's a drum machine from the late 80's that was known for producing a real deeeep bass kick. All rappers LOVE it and it is the shizznit IMHO!!!
Most recently heard in the song "Bossy" by Kelis -
"I told young stunna he should switch the bass
I'm back with an 808 cause i'm bossy "
p.s. they don't make them anymore and no other machine comes close in comparison so if you ever have the opportunity to buy one DO IT. They're practically like old ferrari cars. The get more valuable with age!!

I think Roland made it. It's a drum machine with a very distinctive Bass sound.
I'm pretty sure that's what they're talking about.
