I say Mario Lemieux. If he had not had cancer and a bad back who knows what he could have done. Look at the season he had when he was taking chemotherapy. He could also stand up for himself he didn't need a bodyguard like Wayne did. I think he was more skilled than Wayne. But then, on the other hand, Gordie Howe, to play as long as he did. I'm going to stick with Mario. Super Mario is the one!

Well Wayne may have been "Great" but Mario was "The Best". If you don't believe me go translate his last name for yourself. That is what Lemieux means. Also called Le Magnifcant(and I apoligize if my spelling is off I never really learned French.) Would you rather be Great or Magnifcent? Mario was actually better according to Candians if you go by those nicknames. Anyway Didn't see Orr or Howe play. Also bias of growing up near Pittsburgh, where Mario brought us Hockey and brought the team out of Bankruptcy twice, the second time being when he BOUGHT them. He would do anything for that City, and we knew it. Yet we always felt like we had no right to ask him to do what he did basically. He was too respected. To the one who said Wayne was an icon, UMMM all FOUR of these players were ICONS. Wayne did what he did when he was healthy and on GREAT teams. Mario did what he did when he was in pain and sick and whatever else and on teams that HE built into great teams. Yeah Wayne must have been a great player, Mario said it and Wayne to his credit said the same of Mario, but he had more help. Want the REAL Stat go to PPG(points per game.) That is the Average of the number of points you got per game. Only player to ever retire with it at 2 was Super Mario when he first retired. Not even Wayne was THAT good.

This is a general question...these are all great players. Gordie Howe was a complete player, he was an offensive threat as well as an enforcer. Gretzky and Lemieux were never considered as an enforcer. Orr would stand up for himself. Howe and Orr played in a different era. They didn't have the great skates or equipment, and didn't in as many games during the regular season. I vote for Howe!

Without a doubt, Wayne Gretzky. Not only did he set virtually ever single scoring record, he also brought hockey to the US increasing the marketability of the sport. He single handedly took the Kings to the cup and almost won it. Bobby Orr was also a pivotal player in redefining the game, but just didn't have the impact that Gretzky did.

Gordie Howe was the greatest.

There only were 6 teams in the league when he played and he was facing the top players all the time. The style of game was different as well.

The talent is more diluted with 30 teams.

Gretzky,Orr,and Lemieux were all great players and don't forget Bobby Hull who I would put right up there with Howe.

they are all great players but Mario Lemieux was the best if he had no injuries and no cancer he for sure would of surpass Gretzky records especially the GOALS Lemieux would of killed Gretzky goals record. Lemieux had around 600 goals in like 800 games. nobody as good as Lemieux. and Wayne Gretzky couldn't play back in the days of G.Howe

They're both great in their own ways. Bobby Orr had the style and flash, Gretzky had the scores and name, Lemieux had the intelligence and leadership, and Howe also had the scores plus the longetivity and courage. I'd personally rank them Gretzky, Howe, Orr, and Lemieux.

In my opinion, Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe.

He overcame personal obstacles, was around during the Original Six and played without a helmet. He was a versatile player, a Pioneer of one of the greatest sports! He's the guy Gretzky looks up to.

Gordie Howe Hat Trick: a goal, an assist and won a fight.

No doubt about it. Wayne Gretzky. Holder of 60 NHL records. All significant offensive records are held by him and he's the only player to have his number retired by all 30 teams. Such a class guy and an amazing player. No one will ever beat 894 goals, 1 963 assists and 2 857 points. Others are 50 goals in 39 games, 215 points in one season, 92 goals in one season, 9 Hart Trophys, 11 Art Ross Trophys. The list goes on and on and you can't deny he is the best player of all time.
