Think before you answer this. I just want one, just one film (not a list of all your personal favorites) that you think is the greatest film of all time and why.

Greatest? Star Wars: A New Hope.

Why?

Because its good.

Because it started a revolution.

Because it came out of nowhere.

Because it means so much to so many people (as evident by its box office gross and DVD sales and the many complaints about who shot who and whatnot.)

Damn, this one is a tough. One of the greatest films of all time has to be The Last Don (both 1 & 2) because it is ungodly awesome, especially if you like the Mafia. The actors, the plot, the way it was put together...genious. The first one is about 4 hours long, and the second is almost that. You know it's a kickass film if it can keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time, even when they are that lengthy, and you don't even want to get up to go to the bathroom or even answer the phone! Oh yeah, The Last Don is definitely one of the top films.

I THINK the greatest film of all time is . . . . . in my mind. I just haven't made it yet. (Yes, I am a filmmaker BTW). But I guess the greatest film besides that one would have to be Casablanca, because it's just too good to be true. The dialogue, the characters, the story, Bogey and Bergman at the top of their game, Claude Rains in one of the greatest roles to grace the silver screen, the film is unbeatable. It still holds up today and that is a true testament to the greatest film of all time.
