What kind of ethernet cabling will I need to connect two computers with 10/100 NICs? Will I need cat5 or crossover cabling?

Also, will I need a hub or other extra equipment, or can I simply make a direct connection?

CAT5 is not a specification for a type of network cable. It is a specification for the quality of the wires in the cable only.

You can use CAT5 wire to make a "straight through" or "crossover" cable both.

The only way to make a direct connection is with a "crossover" cable.

If you ever want to share a broadband internet connection though, buying a router now would make sense.

In fact, almost all cables for PC are cat5, the difference is only due to the equipment. For example, if you want connect 2 computers without other devices such as a hub or a router, then you MUST make a crossover cable (one end using T568A and the other using T568B) so that they will both work properly. But as you use a hub or a router, you will just need a normal cable which directly connects them and they certainly work. In a word, the principle is: Crossover when same device and Direct while different.
OK, wish you success.

If you JUST want to connect two computers using the Ethernet cards, then you need the crossover cable. As mentioned, Cat5 is a measure of quality, and you're unlikely to find anything less in a pre-made cable. It's also best if the two computers are running similar versions of Windows. Win98 and WinXP don't like to communicate very well, for instance.

The cable you have said is correct for pc to pc connection you only need a hub if you connect 3 computers or more and remember a workgroup only supports 10 computers and a domain support millions you need Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2003 Server for this. You can easily make a direct connection to just one computer just make sure both have an ethernet card.

You only need a normal cat5 cable.

you'll choose a VGA cable. maximum likely VGA. Your laptop likely has somewhat port on it that that appears like a tiny video show cable (and is likely blue in colour) (appears like somewhat trapezoid with a set of holes in it) it is geared up that you've a extra moderen television (which must have a similar port on it) also prefer to hook the laptop as a lot as audio device, or get an audio cable and hook it as a lot because the aux audio in on your television. desire this helps!
