The Italian played his role perfectly.

There is a psychological side to sports designed to throw the opposing players off-guard in the hopes that they will do something stupid EXACTLY like Zidane did.

Did the Italian deserve it? Quite possibly. More likely he got exactly what he wanted, and Zidane played right into his hands by being an immature cry-baby.

He deserved something. He said he wished a slow and painful death to his family..and that morning Zidane found out his mom was ill. How cruel do you have to be to say something like that?

Now to move on to my theory...I think that this was all done purposely on the Italians side. They knew Zidane had a history of violence and they were possibly trying to get him angry to have him kicked off. They also got lucky when Henry got leg pains. I think Italy had done this to make Zidane angry so he can leave and the Italians would have an advantage.

Since nobody knows exactly what he told Zidane, who only said Materazzi didn't insult him racially, but said some very harsh words concerning his mother and sister, it's hard to tell. If he just told him something like "son of a b****", or "motherfu****", or "your sister is a whore", he didn't deserve it at all. That's common trash talk that shouldn't be taken too personally. If, on the contrary, he said that Zidane's mother is "a terrorist whore" like some rumors suggest, he would have said something racist and should pay for that. In any case, however, the headbutt isn't justified. Zidane was at work in that moment, and his behavior was totally unprofessional and unsportsmanlike.

Zidane acted like an ignorant French pig. It's nice to see France lose and Zidane leave in shame.

Yes he deserved it. I don't say necessarily that Zidane should have picked that moment to do it.

There is always that kind of stuff going on down on the pitch, but this geezer took it way too far with his comment. But it worked for his team. That's what they wanted, that's football.

No, trash talking happens all the time, this is not the first time Zidane has head-butted someone, so he shows a propensity to explode. Excuses,Excuses.

No-one in the great unwashed millions was on the pitch to hear what Materazzi said so when you do know then you can decide if he meritted a headbutt.
