PCI-E, however, offers ample bandwidth to meet the growing demand (for more on the PCI-E spec, see ID# 1509rd2). Taking a layered approach with packetized data transfers, it lets you use various physical mediums, such as copper or optical. Moreover, it's compatible with the current PCI specification.

All PCI-e 3.0 cards are backwards compatible with PCI-e 2.x including all 600 series nvidia cards like the one you mentioned. The keyword there is compatible. You will not get the full performance from your new card because it will have to slow down to the 2.x speeds. If you're ok with that then go for it, otherwise, replace your motherboard as well.

Samuel is correct. However, most PCI 3.0 video cards do not make full use of the 3.0 bus speeds yet - most top out just over 2.0 (2.1) speeds. So, while performance may suffer a bit, it may not even be noticeable for most video cards. The PCI 3.0 was designed for "future" speeds. Most vendors just went to 3.0 specifications as they develop newer cards, but many of the current GPUs can't make full use of 3.0 speeds yet. (top end cards will take advantage of it already)

On a hardware level, no. Pci-e cards will not work in PCI slots.
On a software level though, they are.
A driver for a PCI card will work for the PCI-E equivalent card.
PCI-E is to PCI what SATA is to ATA or PATA.
To a much larger degree than one might think.
Again technology has come full circle and parralel type transfer is being replaced by a serial type transfer method.
And, like hard disks, as drivers for the actual hard disk itself are the same whether it's sata or ata, - the same is true of pci-e and pci cards. I hope that explains it all a bit.

No, they are wired totally differently. Either your motherboard or your video card would fry the second you hit the power button (though I highly doubt a PCIe card would even fit into a PCI slot). Just buy a PCI video card. Here's the fastest made: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814103167

NO, don't even try buying PCI-E card for your motherboard if you don't have PCI-E slot. PCI-E is only software backward compatible with PCI but nothing else.

PCI-E is faster so it is not backwards compatible it like Windows XP being backwards compatible with a 386 computer with Windows XP and PCI-E needs a faster componant.

No, it is not. But for PCI cards, check out www.chiefvalue.com for PCI cards.
