Well, in philosophy, which is where you asked this question, I would say that a functionally defined object is any object that has a single primary function which is its only reason to exist in the first place. So all the simple tools would be examples. Now, I realize after googling that you are a profound and weighty person who perhaps enjoys watching people squirm in here. Man, I am squirming like a squirmy worm, it looks like some field in higher mathematics, which is where I retreat into my Arts and Humanities mode. Thanks UC Steve
