If people other than your friends and family tell you that you have a GOOD SINGING VOICE that's always a good sign. To be sure IF YOU HAVE THE NERVE TO DO IT go to a open mic night at a night club and see how the audience reacts to your singing,if they like it than you can be reasonably sure that you have talent.

when you record your voice.. and listen to it.. and think dang im talented.. thats all it takes from there, you just need the will power, the strength and confidence to stay with it.. and no u dont need to be on american idol.. you just have to create music.. if you enjoy music that much.. someone somewhere will see your love for the music and they will buy it.. the more that they buy it the more money that you can make in the end and eventually make it your full time job.. if thats what you want to do. : )

When you have been told by a trained professional, like a vocal teacher. Your friends and family will lie to you--hence the awful auditions for American Idol!

Well for one, other peopl don't wince when you sing to them. Also, you should know the proper way to sing and understand breathing techniques. Try recording yourself in the bathroom and listen, it can help you find your sound.

I couldn't have said it better myself kakez, but I'll add this; be brutally honest with yourself. Because if you aren't, everyone else will be.
