Lebanon doesn't seem able to put up any kind of opposition to Israel's attacks. Anyone can buy some old soviet SAM equipment for a few thousand dollars, doesn't Lebanon have anything? Does Lebanon have any military to speak of that is under the control of the government to defend itself or is it all Hezbollah?

Well, a couple of people answered your questions, and then others went on with their irrelevant political tirades. To answer, I'll reiterate what a couple of people have said. The Lebanese Army has very little funds and risible military equipment. But, more to the point, the official government of Lebanon does not want to take on Israel. It is distancing itself from Hezbollah, unlike what one answerer here thhought he heard the Lebanese PM say, and it trying to keep this as a fight betweeen Hezbollah and Israel. Israel would probably lilke it better if the Lebanese Army effectively entered into a war with Israel. It would then justify in anybody's eyes what damage Israel is inflicting on the whole country indiscriminately.

Syria wanted to add Lebanon to Greater Syria and conquered it in 1989. Only in March last year did Syria pulled it's troops out of Lebanon.

Hezbollah took over the Southern defense positions and weaponry as the Syrians withdrew. There were a few anti aircraft guns that were left behind by Syria, but they are now scrap metal

There has been no military or social development, since the Syrian withdrawal, because any worthwhile Lebanese politicians that oppose Hezbolla and Syria are assassinated. Lebanon's major political activity is having pro and anti Syrian demonstrations. The Lebanese government seems cowed by Hezbollah.

Hezbollah's major weapons requirements were the missiles that could hit Israeli cities. Hezbollah gambled that Israel would not retaliate, if Israel was attacked. Hezbollah does not seem to care about their Lebanese hosts.

Did anyone watch the interview with the PM of Lebanon on CNN? Evidently he supports Hezbollah and their ways. He is a great example of a chicken-**** PM that has no courage to actually say what he believes. He talks about "disavowing" from the kidnappings of the Israeli soldiers but clearly does not say that Hezbollah was wrong in carrying out such actions. It seems to me that Hezbollah is running Lebanon and since the government cannot separate a terrorist organization from within then Israel is correct in its decision to carry out military activity until Hezbollah is stopped. It seems that the government of Lebanon is either afraid to disassociate itself from Hezbollah or fully supports its terrorist activities. Why should a country that has been victimized for so long by terrorism show any restraint when it has no confidence in the ability of the Lebanese government to control its own terrorist/political opposition party?

Yes they do .They were just caught off guard and the defenses were not in the positions they should have been it . It will change . The Middle East is about to blow. The USA took down Iraq and Iraq kept Iran in check. Now nobody is keeping is keeping Iran in check and they are about to get involved and if they do That means the USA and Their allies get involved then comes Russia and China. They all have interests here . Because of the USA we are on the brink of world war 3 and this time there are a few country's with nuclear power involved and Russia is the only country that has a smart enough leader to control this. The USA and China and all of those Mideast country's have idiots in power and I am from the USA.

This is not a real war. Hezbollah is throwing firecrackers at Israel while Israel is destroying their major infrastructures setting the Lebanese nation back 20 years. That's why they hate Israel.

It is also why Iran needs nukes. Because an incentive package of infinite power plants don't mean anything if Iran is attacked by a stronger military power.

It is also why the US don't want Iran to have nukes, because it will make it harder for the US to invade them.

No, the government is broke and can't afford to build a military. That's why Lebabnon doesn't do anything about Hezbolah themselves.

The only air defence they have is from very old US helicopters.

Israel already went after them at the airport
