Our car (94 Volvo station wagon) has about 90,000 miles and is in good mechanical condition. The a/c has never given us any problems. Recently we took a 1400-mile round trip. On the outbound leg, the a/c worked great. Coming back, it was a little weak - it worked most of the time but occasionally it would blow lukewarm air.

Now it's hardly working at all. It will blow cold for a few minutes, then it will blow outside-temperature air that's really moist and unpleasant, and then it'll work again - but it never blows really super cold the way it used to.

Any diagnostic suggestions or tests we can do to figure out what the problem is? Thanks in advance!

More than likly what happened is on your road trip a rock or metal chunk punctured your condensor in front of your radiator. Have it leak checked and replaced.

it has a small leak. U used it alot longer than usual, or maybe a small stone hit ur condenser...the thingy in front of the radiator.More than likely it has an o-ring leaking. You can begin diagnosing the problem very simply by looking for moist damp oil on the hoses, around the compressor and all the fittings. usually it will and that is where ur leak is. More than likely, being it is an older car, it will have R-12 in it. whatever you do dont have it charged with R-12. for the cost of R-12 refridgerant alone u can retrofit the car to use the newer and supposedly more environmentaly safe R-134a If u where living in the northern Indiana area I could fix your a-c for less than half of what any a-c service shop can. Unfortunatly a-c is way expensive for the consumor to repair because of the E.P.A. I hope this is helpful. My suggestion is to Bribe the young Kid at the A-C repair shop when his boss isnt looking. He will make it work again for almost nothing.Good Luck!

It sounds like you have electrical problem with the thermostat or blower motor. If it dose blow cold air at first than you don't have a leak(don't let them tell you that you need to recharge the freon) look for the problem in your elec./ it may be in the orifice tube filter- if that is the case than the sys. must be drained, flushed the tube replaced system checked for leaks and then recharged.
