Over the past year I will swell up if I get a fly bite (deer/horse fly). My feet, hands and head are worst. Sometimes, my entire calf swells and it doesn't subside for 5-6 days. Is there anything over the counter that anyone else uses to help this?

It is not unusual to have a severe local reaction like this. Watch though and make sure it is local only. That means you swell in the area you were bit only, not say in another limb or body part... Icing can help. Benadryl or the generic version will also help.. If benadryl makes you drowsy taking clarinten or some other non drowsy antihistiman will work. If you lose sensation farther away from the body then the sting, you have no pulse there or cap refill (when you press on skin it turns white and should turn pink when you let go in less than 5 sec.) then go to the ER right away...

Today is Saturday & I got bit by a deer fly on this past Wednesday. It bit me on the back of my lower leg. First I got an unbelievable itch that woke me up that first night. After that & even today, the area swelled up & is real red. The redness goes from my ankle clear around my leg & goes half way up my calf section. I read that when it's this bad, you need antibiotics so I'm going to the emergency room after my shower. Here is a picture of the bite.

use insect repellant at all times on any exposed skin, you can be allergic to anything, i sure know deer fly bites hurt. you might try hydracortizone cream on the bite spot but i doubt it will help much with all the swelling and so on you might try taking benedryl for the allergic reaction and see if it helps, its not expensive.

This happened to my granddaughter a few weeks ago. Scared the heck out of us because it looked really big. We just used some cortisone cream for the itch and it went away in a few days.
You might ask the doctor if you can take some benadryl. If it gets too bad get to the emergency room ASAP
Good luck!

There is an OTC cream sold in Canada that's supposed to work real well, but I don't know what it's called.
